  3. How to make compost with the Indore method
    Categories: Rural development
Compost enhances soil fertility and soil health. The Indore method of making compost was systematised by Howard at Indore (India) between 1924 and 1926. This method involves building a heap by putting layers of different materials on top of each other so that the heap is well aerated (ventilated). Because the heap is well aerated, oxygen is available through the entire heap and high temperatures can be reached during the decomposition process, killing weed seeds and diseases. Composting under aerobic conditions is faster and smells less than composting under anaerobic conditions. There are also some disadvantages of the Indore method: It is labour intensive and it requires a lot of water.
